Where can I find free online Audio Books ?

I would like to know where I can find good quality, free online audio books to listen to? I don't have an ipod or any fancy stuff, just wanted to try it online and see if its for me. Thank you.|||You can use Librivox which has free classic audiobooks. Some public libraries subscribe to a service where you can listen to audiobooks for free.

However, most audiobooks are not free legally online. Authors want payment. So do sound engineers and voice actors.

Can I get a regular CD player to listen to audio books on CD?

I have a friend who has poor vision. I want her to listen to some audio books but I do not know what type of player to get her. Is there a special player for audio books? Where is a good place to get audio players online or in philly? Please help me.|||Get a CD player that can play MP3 CD's, too. Audio books are often 10-15 CD's, but ripped to MP3 can fit on just a couple CD's. Also a lot of downloadable books from libraries are now available in MP3, too.

Maybe a cheap MP3 player would do as well, something like the Creative Zen Stone which doesn't have a display so it can be worked poor/no vision. Players with displays often are almost impossible to use if you can't see the display -- too much "click until you see such and such."|||You should be able to play the audiobooks in a regular CD player, as long as the audiobook is in CD format.|||yes

How do I keep audio books separate from songs on my ipod ?

On Itunes, my audio books are separate, they only appear in the audio book section, not in music but on my Ipod they are in both sections (audio books %26amp; songs).

They never appear in shuffle (good thing!), but I'd like to know if there's any way to make them not appear in the "songs" list of the Ipod.

What are some good books or audio books like Harry Potter?

I really enjoyed those books. Does anyone have any suggestions for other Audio books like these or like fantasy like these. You know what I mean right? Something exciting and just a good overall story.|||Well I personally loved the harry potter series. There are many books I have read after harry potter and the series i started just a week ago is fantastic i personally think it's better than harry potter. Well The book is called twilight and it's about a love story between a human girl Named Isabella swan (Bella who moved in with her dad in forks Washington) and a vampire boy named Edward Cullen (he's a vegetarian vampire which means he don't eat humans only animals.) He also thinks she smells really good like a flower to him a really strong beautiful flower. And it's really hard for him not to eat her because vampires choose their victims by there smell and he says he would rather die than eat her because he loves her so much!!! (AWWW!!!) She falls in love with him and he finds out and they start to date. Bella is a danger magnet and he tells her that he will do anything to keep her safe from the bad guys and when she finally finds out that he loves her he tells her "The lion fell in love with the lamb." the lion is him and the lamb is her. The movie for this book comes out November 21 first 2008!!! (I CAN"T WAIT!!!) Edward Cullen is played by Robert Pattinson (he also played Cedric Diggory in the harry potter films) And Bella swan is played by Kristen Stewart (the girl in zannthurra) I Honestly am OBSESSED!!! with this book it is fantastic!!! Please e-mail me at simplymiss95@yahoo.com if you decide to check it out and if you don't i would still like some feedback thanks!!!

P.S the books are in this order Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, And Breaking Dawn!!! and maybe a new one called Midnight Sun!!!

Can listening to audio books helps my writing skills?

Writing skills, grammar skills. Which is better read books or listening to audio book?|||Reading books is far more beneficial.

However, audio books may help you with this:

Annunciation of certain words

Learning new vocabulary

Listening and learning to new sentence structure

Other than that, reading is far more "involved" and will help with just as much, even more.|||yes psych.com revealed that listening to stories can be just as helpful for language usage like reading as actual reading. think of a baby learning by listening to its parents voice. any type of listening, even music will help you build a better vocabulary, not necessarily a good vocabulary as far as some music goes but better. same with audio books. if You have ever written a paper and then read it aloud to yourself and noticed mistakes You made you would understand.|||reading a book would help more than listening to one being read.

I have 2 questions...

Up untill today i didn't even know you can rent audio books.

Do you think its better to rent or buy audio books?

Where should i rent my audio books from?

How much memory do audio books tend to take up?

How much memory space in mb/gb say on an iPod do audio books take up? Is it a lot, so you can maybe only have one on at a time, or not much so you can have loads and just listen to them whenever?|||it depends on the book about 700 800mbs per cd. you can change the quality down and get more though. when you change over you get alot more on mp3 like 700 to 800mb a whole audio book for a novel i have a 16gb and can hold tons of books but i usually have 5 on there for work. with plenty of space enough for a couple of weeks in case i forget to take it home on weekends|||depending on the size of book and the way it was recorded and encoded between 100mb and 900mb i highly recommend american gods by neil gaimen(288mb) the audio book is wonderfully read and the actual book is wonderfully written.

Why are star wars audio books abridged fiction ?

I recently downloaded the audio book "Star Wars: Courtship of Princess Leia" from iTunes and saw that it was abridged.

Looking at the rest of the audio books on iTunes I saw that all of the star wars books are abridged.

Why is that?

|||Many audio books, not just Star Wars audio books, are released in an abridged format to condense material to a suitable length.

Novels are supposed to be read silently to oneself, which is generally faster than reading aloud. To release a complete version of the novel in audio form would likely last over 20 hours and therefore be very expensive to both the publisher to produce and the consumer to purchase, so instead the publisher will remove anything from small references to entire scenes which are considered superfluous, i.e. they do not move the story along.

What is the best ipod to play audio books in the car?

I'm looking for an ipod to play audio books on the way to work, which is the best one and does it plug into the car somewhere?|||Any ipod will play audiobooks. However, the shuffles don't show you what you are choosing to play, so I wouldn't recommend those. For plugging into a car, there are several ways to go:

A charger that goes into the cig lighter. $20

A transmitter that uses an FM channel - $20

A converter that uses a cassette in the cassette player $10

A combined charger/transmitter. $50|||wider screen, better view|||apple|||big screen|||You can play audio books on any ipod. What books/free audio books really do help you learn french?

I've tried a few and none of them have worked. Does anyone have suggestions of 'miracle' free programs that really do help you learn a language... If not french... something? I really want to learn another language. And I know that miracle is stretching it, but you get my drift!

What are some good audio books to listen to?

I like to listen to audio books when I work but I don't know what is good to listen to. I just finished the harry potter series and I listened to dragon age and couple of Anita Blake books before that|||Jim Butcher's Dresden books, read by James Marsters.|||I second the Dresden series, unabridged, available through Audible.com - currently standing at 12 books of about 16 hours each (except for the first). There is also a book of short stories called Side Jobs - avoid the short stories that appear in collections with other authors since they aren't read by the regular narrator.

James Marsters is awesome reading (performing, really) these books, though the first one is the roughest of them. By book 3, you can't possibly imagine anyone else as Harry Dresden.

The audio books pretty much redeem the novels from the disappointment that was the TV series on the SciFi Channel. Really - avoid the TV series. Marsters wasn't in that, and they nerfed the whole concept so much it was barely recognizable.|||I listened to Angelology by Danielle Trussoni about a month ago. It was AWESOME! 17 CDs, but worth every minute

How does the Amazon kindle read audio books, with a real person's voice or a computer's voice?

I am getting an Amazon kindle. I know it reads audio books aloud. Will it read them like a CD does with a real narrator's voice or with a computer voice?|||There's actually two types of audio books Kindle will read.

They have Kindle eBooks with Text to Speech enabled. These are read with a computer voice. Then there are Audible audio books that the Kindle can do. These are essentially sound files and are usually narrated by a human being.|||It supports audio books which are .MP3 files. Those are books read aloud by people, often actors. They can be quite expensive and they are just the audio files, no e-book file to read along. E-books that are text-to-speech enabled are just ordinary e-book files read in a computer voice. Many publishers disable the text-to-speech feature though so you really need to have a look at some specific Kindle books and see how many of them are enabled.|||I'm not sure if Kindles actually support audio books in addition to regular books (audio books are basically just loooooong MP3s of a real person's voice). But I know that when it reads a regular book aloud, it's with a computer voice.|||See here:

It would be a downloaded file so make sure that you pick one that has a lot of good comments.

If you don't know how to use torrents, then you have to search the questions to learn how to use it because my friend set me up with it and I just know the steps she showed me. They are downloaded files that take a snap to get. I got a FULL 40 song deluxe edition cd on my computer within 20 minutes (on a shtty connection to boot!) As far as I know, eBooks are much like music. you might be able to find some through various channels, but downloading them without paying would be illegal technically. However, if you do want to view a book online, the best way is to sign up for a library card with your local library. Many libraries now have downloadable media (movies and books) and you basically check them out just like a book. You download it and your download will just expire after a certain amount of time. You can, of course, check it out again. Not all libraries do this, but most are catching on, especially in bigger cities.

-A contract with a publishing company.

-An audio interface (like these M-Audio ones): http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=prod鈥?/a>

Can I start listening to the Fate of a Jedi audio books with only the movies as current info?

I know there is a bunch of Star Wars Books out there and I was wondering if I could just start in and listen to the Fate of a Jedi books. I'm a mower and like to listen to audio books while mowing. Most of the books are in abridged form (a condensed version of the the book). The Fate series, the Movie books, and a few are in unabridged form (the book read strait from the pages) which I prefer|||Well considering that the Fate of the Jedi series is set about 45 years after the events of ep VI ... I think you would be beyond lost in respect to the story line. Off hand I'd say that the only characters that you'll know about are Han, Luke, Leia, Lando, Wedge ... and that's about it. Any other characters you know from the movies have died in the 70 + books that are in the story line before the Fate Of The Jedi series. Personally I've read just about every one of the books that has come out over the years so I fancy myself a Star Wars EU (Expanded Universe of books) Guru and reading the Fate of the Jedi series has sent me back to my book shelve to the older books to "refresh" my memory and even that doesn't work sometimes with this new series.

On the other hand, since you don't have the knowledge from those books it might not matter and you'll understand the Fate Of The Jedi series better ... I have to say that I highly doubt it but who knows.

As for the audio books ... I absolutely HATE the "abridged" versions ... they are a slap in the face to the author and tend to leave out a ton of info that would make the story easier to understand. As you say, the unabridged versions are hard to find and usually don't exist.

I would suggest you look for the books of the Thrawn Trilogy to listen to. The titles are "Heir To The Empire", "Dark Force Rising", and "The Last Command". These books were written by Hugo Award winning author Timothy Zahn and are brilliantly written. They are set 5 years after the events of ep VI and are where the books really started.

I've found a few audio books on the p2p sites but they are "at your own risk" things with all the trash that can be found on the p2p sites.

May The Force Be With You ...

.|||I believe you they are self contained. I only listen to one Star Wars book that my library had. I know some of the authors from podcast like Adventures in SciFi Publishing and they are good authors.

Jim, http://www.jimpettis.com/wheel/|||Ask if "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is on audio... there will be a lot of disks, but I know there were fourteen for HP7 alone, so maybe they have it and maybe you'll want to get it. "Grendel" by John Gardner... great fantasy around the Beowulf saga from the opposite view-- hope it's on audio.

"The Once and Future King" by T.H. White; the definitive book on the Camelot legend, very well done; another long book worth the time.

"The Traveler" by John Twelve Hawks... I have slim hopes it's on audio, but it's a good start to what promises to be a fine series set a bit into the future (we hope).

"The Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. LeGuin; it should be on audio, and it's the beginning of a good series... in my opinion this book is the best of the lot.

What is the cheapest way to do this?|||Yeah the library is the cheapest way.|||You could go to the library and borrow some audio books and just down load them onto your ipod. That is free! The cds could be played on any system, so you could hold off on the ipod for your mom if you want. Most libraries have a large selection, just find a larger library. Have fun!

How do I put downloaded audio book files into the books section of iTunes?

I downloaded two audio books into iTunes and the files went into my music folder, so now I have "Part 1-62" in my music section, is there a way to take these files and transfer them to the Books section?|||Select all of the files that you want, and click get info (right click on a PC or command I on a mac). Then go to the Options tab of the box and click the Media Kind drop down. Select Audiobook and you should be set.|||So, to get your audio books to show up there, you need to trick i Tunes and your i Pod into thinking the tracks are stored in that format. On Windows, this is easy enough to explain and understand, but the process is labor-intensive. You need to change the file extension for every track in the audio book from .m4a to .m4b, and then play a few seconds of each track after renaming. Sometimes, no matter what you do, iTunes remains convinced that the tracks should not be in the Audiobooks menu. When this happens, those tracks are doomed, there is nothing you can do with them directly.

Does anyone subscribe to a good audio book rental service like Netlfix but for autio books?

I love to listen to audio books in the car, when I'm walking, or when I'm doing mundane chores but they are expensive. My library has a very modest collection of audio books that I like and I've pretty much read them all.

Please, I can look them up online but want recommendations from people who actually use these services. Thanks.|||I would recommend Simply audiobooks

Hope this helps

Where can I download audio versions of the books The Crazy Horse Electric Game and the Sky Is Falling free?

Ok, I have this reading assignment for school, and I need to read the two books: The Crazy Horse Electric Game by Chris Crutcher, and The Sky is Fallung by Kit Pearson. Where could I download an audio verision of these books for FREE? Or at least one of them. If not those, at least give a good source of where to download many, many audio books for free, and maybe I can find a different one! Thanks for the help!|||You can't download current books in written or audio version for free because that is stealing from the author.

Go to a public library where your tax dollars support the author.|||The books you鈥檙e asking about are still protected by copyright, and will be for 70 years after the authors die. You won鈥檛 find either free online legally, either in text or audio form.

Once in a while, an author will choose to put a book online for free, but that鈥檚 *extremely* rare because it ends all possible income from sales of that book. With a very few exceptions, most authors simply can鈥檛 afford to give away the product of their work.

This is their livelihood. They have bills to pay, the same as the breadwinner(s) in your household. Please don鈥檛 steal from them.

If you can鈥檛 afford the book, then get it from the library. If you library doesn鈥檛 have it, ask about inter-library loans, which are often free or very inexpensive. Here they're fifty cents.

How to put audio-books in the audio-books section on mac and iphone?

When I add them from mac they are put in as songs. There is no audio-books in the library of the mac but there is audio books in the library of the iphone.|||One thing that I have noticed when installing iTunes fresh is that not all the options are checked to display in iTunes. So, on your Mac:

1) Click "iTunes" in the upper left of the application

3) In the "General" section (the first area that opens, usually) make sure that "Audiobooks" is checked...if it is not, check it

4) Press "OK"

This should show you the audio books that you have purchased from Audible or Apple. Good luck.

Audio books?

My husband will be driving from Florida to NY in a few weeks. Since it is his birthday, I want to give him some audio books that he can listen to on his trip. He's 55 yr. old. What do you recommend? What have you listened to that you liked?|||I will tell you what I didn't like. The Da Vinci Code. Whoever read that was horrible. Look for some with good actors narrating. The voice makes a huge difference. Pax -C|||If he's a history buff, the Anne Perry novels on the second world war are really good. Also Jimmy Carter's "The Hornet's Nest" about the American Revolution. He's the only president who has written a fiction novel. Tim Russert's book "Big Russ and Me" about his father was interesting. I think TR is 57. Might share some of the same memories. Adventure stories by Tom Clancy and Jack London are always good. Light science fiction mystery by J B Robb are enjoyable. I like the westerns by Louis L'Amour, especially the Sacketts.

I probably gave you more than you want - good reading.|||If he's like me, he'll like any of the classic adventure stories. Some of my favorites:

*Jules Verne*

Journey to the Center of the Earth

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Mysterious Island

Around the World in 80 Days

*Rudyard Kipling*

The Jungle Books

*Arthur Conan Doyle*

Sherlock Holmes

*T H White*

The Sword in the Stone

Not quite excellent:

*Edgar Rice Burroughs*

The Tarzan series

The Pellucidar series

Most of these are old enough to be free, and you may find these (for free) on LibriVox (www.librixox.com).

Another good bet (if he likes younger people's stories): Doctor Doolittle. The story is similar to, but also quite different from, the (excellent musical) movie.

If he likes fantasy, you can check out my favorites here (with links to audio books):
