I done a little searching online and every site I find is a subscription site. I don't read enough books to pay x amount of dollars a month and would rather download the few I want to read. My local library doesn't have a great selection. Being able to play them on an mp3 player would be more convenient than an e book reader. Adding audio books from a CD to the iTunes 'Books' library and not the 'Music' library.?
I've stared using iTunes and I've downloaded an audio book from Audible.co.uk. This worked fine and it now appears in the "books" library. yes all you have to do is go into itunes find the audiobook in itunes right click on it and go to get info then go to the options tab and click media kind and choose book or audiobook i'm not sure which but try both. Then eventually it will be in your books library.

I follow all the instructions for burning a wma data CD but my car's wma cd player just says "Reading Disc..." and never plays it. For overdrive.com, you have to use Windows Media 10 to burn CD. Keep in mind that some DRM files are set to not allow burning CD. You have two choices. 1) transfer the files to a portable mp3 player that can play WMA. 2) Remove the DRM protection. Just curious, because I was in the Books and Authors section on here, and someone said she could never get past three chapters of a book. I have enjoyed listening to some and if someone asked, "Have you read such and such?" I would say yes, even if I had listened to it. But inside, I know the difference. I have a different relationship to a book that I have read than I do to one to which I have listened. I have interpreted the words on the page myself and not had them interpreted for me. Sometimes this makes a real difference.
Take the sentence "Is that for me?" You know it can be read many different ways, depending on context and to some extent the reader. You can read it as casual inquiry, without inflection. In audio books what does unabridged mean?
Just got into the world of audio books but not sure is best to download( for ipod) "unabridge" books or books that have nothing next to them as there's a price difference.In audio books what does unabridged mean?

Ok, I like to listen to the Harry Potter books on audio when I go to bed. But I heard that it's better for your babies to listen to classical music. So, I programed my ipod to play 1 hr of HP and then go into classical music. What effect do you think this will have on my twins?

I read to my son when my wife was pregnant, and I still do! He's an avid reader and has always been well above average in reading and comprehension. I'm not sure if there's a direct correlation, but I like to believe that there is. I think Classical Music would be soothing to you baby too.

i heard its suppose to making your babies smarter. when my mom was pregnant she did the same thing but put the heard phones on her stomach once in a while. i promise you when my sister was born she had a nature attraction to those songs and vincent van gogh paintings... weird lol

However, since there was some research years back that indicated that while classical music isn't likely to be of any help to the normal child, a child with brain injury may benefit due to what appeared to be an increase in creating bypasses to damaged or malformed synapses in the brain. If nothing else, if mom is all calm and rested, babies will be all calm and rested too. You would create an automatic response - classical music - calm and rested. That could be helpful with twins. ;)

I like audio books in theory, but when I try to listen to one I find my mind wandering or having to rewind because I didn't catch something. How do you listen? In bed? In front of your computer? I'm not a frequent user of the audiobook format, but I do listen when I'm driving on a long trip, or as an alternative to get my kids interested in books. The Harry Potter series, read by Jim Dale, is highly entertaining. I've also enjoyed UR and The Gingerbread Girl (short stories) and The Shining (novel, enjoyed in written form as well as audiobook) by Stephen King.
Not sure about the quality of the audiobooks, but Jodi Picoult writes drama, mostly concerning family life. Tenth Circle was my favorite, though My Sister's Keeper was also good.
You might also enjoy Steve Berry's Cotton Malone series. The first in the series is The Templar Legacy. They're a mix of history, treasure hunt, drama, suspense and intrigue. Comparable to Dan Brown, but so much better.

I'm not a frequent user of the audiobook format, but I do listen when I'm driving on a long trip, or as an alternative to get my kids interested in books. The Harry Potter series, read by Jim Dale, is highly entertaining. I've also enjoyed UR and The Gingerbread Girl (short stories) and The Shining (novel, enjoyed in written form as well as audiobook) by Stephen King.
Not sure about the quality of the audiobooks, but Jodi Picoult writes drama, mostly concerning family life. Tenth Circle was my favorite, though My Sister's Keeper was also good.
You might also enjoy Steve Berry's Cotton Malone series. The first in the series is The Templar Legacy. They're a mix of history, treasure hunt, drama, suspense and intrigue. Comparable to Dan Brown, but so much better.

Are the audio books off Itunes any good?
I want to buy The Hunchback of Notre Dame audio book off of iTunes, simply because I am terribly nearsighted (I need my contacts to see 6 inches in front of me) and the copy of the book I own has font that's size 10. I find the audiobooks on iTunes a bit overpriced, but if you enjoy them, as I do, then it's worth the money.
They are of good sound quality, the reading isn't too fast, and it's easy to understand!

I would try going into the computer hard drive and dragging the audiobook files into the itunes program (I have a mac, I can't help with PC). Once inside the itunes program, adjust the genre to audiobooks with no space in between. This worked for me when I purchased an audio book from Audible.com, but i'm not sure if it works with other companies.

If your question is whether to listen to an audio book rather than not read at all. Then in that case it is the lesser evil to listen to the audio book, and I would claim that is not cheating at all, but of greater benefit to all than had you not even listened to the audio book.
All of this assumes that the audio book itself is quality material worthy of even the limited time spent listening.

It depends on the book. Sometimes the audiobook is released at the same time as the print version, sometimes there is a delay. The one's I've looked at took maybe a couple of months to be released in audio format after the initial release of the paper version. I don't know if there is a specific time table they use or anything like that though.
It depends on the book. Sometimes the audiobook is released at the same time as the print version, sometimes there is a delay. The one's I've looked at took maybe a couple of months to be released in audio format after the initial release of the paper version. I don't know if there is a specific time table they use or anything like that though.

I download audio books from the library to a program provided by the library called Overdrive Media Console on my XP computer with no problem. When I try to do it on my Vista computer, I get a message, No Windows Media Audio Shortcut (WAX) Path Was Included on the Command Line. I haven't read a book in a while, and whenever I do try to read one, it usually takes me a while to finish it, so, I've been thinking about trying to buy an audio book off of iTunes to listen to on my iPod. I can only listen to audio books when I have something else I'm doing that doesn't require devoted left-brain thought. I listen while I'm driving, while I'm walking, while I'm messing around with designs and I used to do jigsaw puzzles a lot, and loved listening to audio books while doing them.
But I can't just sit and listen without doing something else. I'd rather just grab a book and sit.
If you're having issues with reading comprehension, with understanding what it is that you just read, try reading along with an audio book. Often, people can read too fast when they have the physical book, and skip large sections without meaning to. The audio book would help you stay on pace, and reading the words along will keep you focused.
The experience of listening to a book and reading it are actually very similar. I listen to about half the books I read in a given year. When I think back to a book, I sometimes can't remember if it was a book I read or if it was a book I listened to. The same parts of your brain are activated when you listen to a book, or when you read it.

My local library allows people to download Overdrive audio books. When I couldn't find what I wanted on mp3, I was told by the librarian that most of the Overdrive books are in WMA format - but I don't have a WMA player.

I was thinking of purchasing harry potter and the philosophers stone audio book in german and wanted to know if it is worded the same as the written german harry potter book. I know there is a difference between spoken and written german and was wanting to use the first harry potter book to help me learn german by seeing and hearing the words in a story, but is there a difference between them? I’d definitely recommend buying the book and audio book. Reading and listening at the same time is a very good and effective method to learn a second language.
I teach German as a second language and I always recommend this method.
1. You’ll learn a lot of new words just because of the content (learn always phrases not only words!)
2. You’ll learn the correct pronunciation because you listen at the same time to the audio.
3. You’ll learn grammar automatically (without learning grammar rules by heart) – just by listening.
If you hear a word order or structure a lot, you’ll suck up the structure automatically. This is why children are able to speak their mother tongue fluently by the age of six/seven without grammar books.
But there is one trick you can make this method far more effective:
If you repeat every chapter several times before going on to the next, it’ll boost your level very quickly.
So why is that?
It’s because everything you perceive enters at first your ultra short term memory and for a few seconds you are able to repeat what you have just heard. But right after that it’ll be deleted instantly from your memory (it’s gone!). This is a protective mechanism of your brain in order to prevent a sensory overload.
You have to imagine there are different filters. The filters try to filter unimportant information and delete them. Information classified as important will get from your ultra short term memory into the short term memory. And only after some more repetitions the information will enter your long term memory.
So by reading and listening to an audio book, your brain gets so many information all at once, it will delete most of it. But you can prevent the erasing by repetitions.
So in short – yep you should buy it! I have another tip for you. There is a great German course via email that uses exactly this method. There are funny stories and audio files to each text (the text is in German and partly translated in English). So you can listen and read at the same time. And the best of all: It’s free. You can subscribe at: Leicht-Deutsch-Lernen.com. So have fun with “Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen”.

Do you believe that reading a book and listening on the same time the audio book can benefits someone who needs to improve his English? utorrent will do what you need -- allow you to download audiobooks and a lot of other things. Do some reading on how torrrents work before trying to use it, though. For particular torrents, try www.mininova.org or www.piratebay.org.
Limewire will too, but it's not as good -- a lot of viruses there, or so I here.
You can also download lots of files via rapidshare and other file sharing sites on the internet. Join www.warez-bb-org to get access to links to particular titles; it's free and easy.
For many file downloads, you'll need to know how to deal with rar files. Download and use winrar to decompress these files.
If the popular authors you have in mind are still alive and working, and even if they have 'only' been deceased about 75 years and no one as literary executor extended copyrights on their work, there is no legal site where you can download books for free.
Illegal sites are often a target for 'bugs' as well as putting up book with pages missing in an effort to avoid prosecution. [ADD: 'limewire' is not a safe or legal site.]
Project Gutenberg is the best way to go for books no longer under copyright; they have tens of thousands, many ready to download for a free audio.

utorrent will do what you need -- allow you to download audiobooks and a lot of other things. Do some reading on how torrrents work before trying to use it, though. For particular torrents, try www.mininova.org or www.piratebay.org.

I get to listen to my mp3 at work since it's so boring, and I'm just really tired of listening to music all day.
