Is listening to audio books significantly less brain exercise than reading for senior citizens?

My mother-in-law is interested in listening to audio books but is worried about keepring her her brain sharp and suspects listening isn't as good as reading for her mind. Has there been any research done on this topic? Is reading significantly more stimulating than hearing the same material? Is listening to audio books significantly less brain exercise than reading for senior citizens?
yes reading do increase our mind as after reading 2 pages we have to recall the information and the sharper mind can only recall or in otherwise can convert there memory or mind to be sharper.
